Resizing and compression solve different problems, but they work best together when an image is much larger than the place where it will actually be used. This tool lets you change dimensions and encoding in one pass from the original source.

Resize vs compress

Resizing changes the pixel grid. A 4000×3000 photo resized to 1200×900 contains far fewer pixels. Compression changes how efficiently those pixels are stored in the output file.

Why do both in one workflow?

If a website will never display an image wider than 1200 pixels, compressing a 5000-pixel source at its original dimensions spends bytes on pixels the layout cannot use. Resizing first gives the encoder a more appropriate amount of visual information to work with.

Doing the resize and encoding from the original source also avoids repeatedly recompressing an already compressed derivative.

How to resize and compress an image

  1. Add the best available source image.
  2. Open Advanced options.
  3. Enter the width or height you need. Leave the other field blank to preserve the source aspect ratio.
  4. Choose WebP, AVIF, JPEG, or PNG.
  5. Use the quality slider, or enter a target file size in KB.
  6. Compress the image and check the final dimensions and file size.

What dimensions should you choose?

Choose dimensions from the destination rather than from a generic rule. A blog content column, hero image, ecommerce card, and thumbnail all need different source sizes.

Should you resize before compressing?

Conceptually, yes: decide how many pixels the destination needs, then decide how those pixels should be encoded. In practice, this tool performs both decisions in the same final operation from the source image.

Target size and resizing

If you enter a target such as 100 KB, the tool first searches compression quality. If that is not enough and the resize fallback is enabled, it progressively reduces dimensions and tries again. Turn that option off when preserving dimensions matters more than hitting the exact byte limit.

Frequently asked questions

Does resizing lower image quality?

Can I resize without changing aspect ratio?
